Lee and Peggy Gensman, one of the most dynamic families to affect Tualatin's development, moved here in the early 50's. Peggy received her Realtors® license in 1952 and began sellling homes amid her duties as a mother, Cub Scout den mother and PTA president. Ten years later the couple established Metro-West Realty, with Peggy selling and Lee serving as engineering consultant.
While Lee provided leadership to the city as councilman and mayor, helping to bring vital services to Tualatin, Peggy served on the Architectural Review Board and the Core Area Parking District. Both were instrumental in the formation of the Tualatin Business Association, now the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce, which Peggy served as President.
Metro-West sold 80% of the property in downtown Tualatin before the Urban Renewal District was formed. The Gensman's acted as agents on many subdivisions and developed several of their own, including Buckhorn Hills off 93rd, which they named because they had "bucked horns" with the city so often.
When Lee was mayor, from 1966 to 1970, he remembers also being the city scapegoat. Residents would stop Lee on his way home to complain and argue endlessly about city affairs. Someone once called at 5 AM and announced that "my cow is in heat and who had a registered bull?" It was during Lee's tenure in City Hall that the vital infrastructure was put in place to allow the growing town to develop with as few hitches as possible. Decades later, Metro-West Realty is still active in Tualatin and the surrounding metro areas.
